What started as a routine day of medical appointments in Dublin turned into an exciting opportunity to meet one of Ireland’s presidential candidates right here in Navan.

A Long Day Takes an Interesting Turn

After leaving home around 6:30 AM for a doctor’s appointment in Dublin, my day was already shaping up to be a marathon. The appointment itself was quick and efficient, but the journey was lengthy. Instead of taking my usual bus back to Slane, I decided to head to Navan for some shopping, a decision that would lead to an unexpected encounter.

Commotion at the Shopping Centre

As my bus pulled into Navan around the shopping centre, I immediately noticed something unusual. TV cameras, crowds of people, and an unmistakable buzz of excitement filled the air. Curious, I approached some folks in the crowd and asked what was happening.

“We’re waiting for Catherine Connolly, the presidential candidate,” they told me.

Perfect timing! This wasn’t my first impromptu interview with a presidential candidate. Back on September 24th, I had a chance encounter with Jim Gavin, another presidential candidate. Though Jim has since withdrawn from the race, that spontaneous interview reminded me of the unique opportunities that come with keeping your eyes open and your microphone ready.

Inside the Shopping Centre

As Catherine Connolly arrived, there was quite a scene hecklers and supporters alike created a lively atmosphere. But once inside the shopping centre, the candidate made her rounds, visiting different shops, shaking hands, and thanking people for their support.

The energy in the movement she represents is palpable. As she mentioned during our brief exchange, the momentum has been building since July, growing in intensity with each passing day. There’s a sense that this election is truly in the hands of the Irish people, and she expressed absolute confidence in their judgment.

The Question

With everyone vying for her attention, I managed to get my question in for Irish Tourist Radio: “What’s your favourite holiday spot here in Ireland?”

Her answer was both diplomatic and heartfelt. The more she travels through Ireland, she said, the more she realizes that every place is beautiful. While she admitted to thinking Galway was the most beautiful place, an opinion she still holds dear, she acknowledged that everywhere in Ireland has its own special charm.

Discovering Ireland’s Beauty

It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with anyone who’s spent time exploring this country. From the rugged coastlines of the Wild Atlantic Way to the gentle rolling hills of the midlands, from bustling market towns like Navan to quiet villages tucked away in the countryside, Ireland truly offers something special around every corner.

Until Next Time

As the encounter wrapped up and Catherine headed to her car, I was reminded once again why I love what I do for Irish Tourist Radio. You never know when you’ll stumble upon a great story or have the chance to chat with someone interesting about their favourite corners of our beautiful country.
